Hi Karen, thanks for the info. Well, it looks like the weather will be pretty good for tomorrow so I'll really try to make it! I see it's 2 long ave's to the restaurant from GCS but depending on how long the taxi line is, I may walk it. Since I'm not a "city girl" maybe when we're done for the night, someone can help me hail a cab outside the restaurant for the trip back?! I look forward to meeting everyone!

Hi Sue,
Thanks for the email. The size of the group varies depending on the time of the year and the weather. I have a core group and then others join through Meet Up or word of mouth. On January 25 i am hoping to get 6 or more. It is casual, but I think supportive and friendly. I understand traveling is hard, but we'd love to welcome you to our group.
Best,
Karen

Hi, just found your site via Creaky Joints. I have been looking for a face-to-face support group. It looks convenient from Grand Central. Travel into the city from Westchester when I'm not feeling 100% is challenging, but perhaps a good idea if I can meet some of "our own"! Do you typically get a lot of people to come to these meetings? Thanks...

Hi Karen,

I just read this beautiful article you wrote. In just a short time we will be visiting the memorial to pay our respects. It felt personal to me ten years ago as if I lived in New York. As you said, we’ll never really be healed. We to will not forget the pain. It is sad when it takes a tragedy like this to bring people together.

You also said it best in your last paragraph about taking a part of each day to reach out to others in need by showing kindness and caring for nature. I found this out myself five years ago after realizing these days are not about me or my disease, but about those also who have a need for people like me that can share our stories to help others.

I have found volunteering for the Senior Center, the city Police department, and our local hospital helping the nurses and doctor’s with their patients a time to reflect on those who have it much worse then I could imagine. During this time I do not think about myself or pain. I especially love to talk with patients who do not have any families to be there with them. For me helping in any capacity can make a difference hopefully in someone’s life.

I love what you wrote here and know where your kind heart is. I also remember the first time I read your book when it came out and shared it with my wife, family, and friends. Since then, ‘Enemy Within’ has given me strength, hope, love, peace and understanding that you wrote. I feel I have grown daily since then and have the ‘optimism that Michael J. Fox wrote about to hopefully bring communities together and make this a better world to live in.

I think if all of us that are rich or poor, healthy or ill, and neighbor to neighbor were to apply a small piece of random acts of kindness, we could make this a better place to live without the hate and violence on day.
Michael J. Fox, his wife Tracey and their resilient family are also our heroes.

To all of Karen’s readers, she is also resilient and has a golden heart. Please take time out to write her here as a comment or on her general blog. Please if you have not done so, pick up her book and read it. I know many people who have and the comments on Enemy Within on Amazon.com will reflect this kind and wonderful person who took her busy schedule as a Teacher and RA Advocate to write this book about her growing up with RA and how she finds strength daily to continue to help others. I know she help my family and I……….Thank you Karen !

Hi Ray,
My husband is a big believer about grains causing inflammation too. He has cut out grains from his diet completely and I am trying.
Thanks for the information. Good luck with your book.
Best

Hi Leticia,
How are you? I clearly remember your face from FB. So happy you have reached out again. Thank you. How are you feeling?
I would love to meet you one day too. I've been to the OC a few times, but not this year. I appreciate all your support.
I try to do something every day to promote my book as I do believe it has made a difference to many people with and without RA.
I used to have my blog linked to FB. I guess I should do that again to increase traffic to my site.
I've enjoyed 'Be KInd to Humankind Week' as when I think of what I can do for others, I tend to stop thinking about my RA.
Till later, take good care

I used to have RA until I gave up all corn and corn products. I've been free now for 27 years although one corn chip will produce pain within 24 hours. Even the corn starch used to bind aspirin tablets will produce a response. Avoiding corn fructose is the most difficult part of my regime.

If you research the history of RA and that of corn you will see how RA followed corn as it spread from the Valley of Mexico to North and South America and then, after Columbus, to Europe and Africa.

Scientists have recently discovered that all RA sufferers have an immune system response to a particular type of carbohydrate ( called a GAG) that is most commonly found in corn.

Grains, like corn, are not edible in Nature to any species of Primate so it's no wonder our immune system sees these as a potential pathogen and mounts an immune system response to them. About 80% of migraine sufferers, for instance, are allergic to wheat.
